<p>I have extensive experience as a Creative Director and Tech Lead on various physical and web-based interactive experiences. I spot opportunities, diagnose problems and make things happen.</p>
<p>I work with artists, architects, creative studios, cultural institutions, theatres and brands. I have programmed installations at the London Olympics, Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Music Festivals. I have made online experiences for Google Creative Lab, Haroon Mirza &amp; Nike.</p>
<p>I am a big picture thinker who thinks systems, concepts and code. I care about design and production values.</p>
<p>I have spent years making and using bespoke C++, JS &amp; OpenGL/ES/WebGL frameworks. Now, often Unity 3D is my rocket of choice to deliver explosive experiences. My work encompasses visual R&amp;D and prototyping, sensor technologies, web technologies, hardware integrations, realtime graphics, typography, shaders and live video streaming.</p>

<h1>Bio</h1>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Ross Cairns creates digital experiences especially in collaboration with other disciplines. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In 2014 Ross received Tate Britain’s IK Prize along with Tommaso Lanza and David Di Duca for <i>After Dark</i>, a project which had a global media reach figure of one billion. Their robots, controlled through the Internet by members of the public at  home, roamed the Tate Gallery to view the masterpieces.  He has become a frequent collaborator with Jason Bruges Studio, Gabby Shawcross, BAT Studio, Helicar&amp;Lewis, Biblotheque Design, A Practise For Everyday Life and many others.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Ross, from Dundee, Scotland works frequently with Tommaso Lanza. In 2011 they established their company, The Workers, to create seriously playful digital products. The Workers’ approach of ‘getting digital collaborators in early’  fosters meaningful digital intervention. They seize  opportunities offered by the latest accessible and open source technology and then expose these opportunities to collaborators from other creative disciplines. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">He is an adept computer programmer and technologist, skilled in variety programming languages both high level (C#, JavaScript, Cg, Clojure, XSLT) and low level (C, C++, Objective-C, GLSL). Ross is self-taught in this area and explores how digital creations can communicate meaning or feeling effectively by action. By doing it.  </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Ross believes that programming is not just the domain of the developer or the computer programmer, and possessing a  playful attitude to computer code is vital for any practitioner in the creative sector.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">To engage traditional creative practises in code Ross created a series of themed workshops using Unity 3D technology. He has delivered these workshops to both Architecture and Interior Design students at Canterbury University of the Arts, University of Westminster and soon at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture. His goal is to encourage students to use digital tools as part of the creative process for projects where interactivity or digital technology is the vehicle for creation and not the final outcome.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Ross studied on the notable Design Interactions course at the Royal Collage of Art in London during 2007 to 2009. He was also a creative designer for the graphic design studio Atalanta in Glasgow, Scotland from 2006 to 2007. Prior to this he studied Interactive Media Design at the University of Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design from 2002 to 2006.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">He regularly speaks about his work, collaboration ethos and the potential of digital technologies at conferences and festivals both nationally and internationally such as Design Indaba in Cape Town and Resonate in Serbia.</span></p>

<h1>After Dark at Tate Britain</h1>
<p>The live broadcast event, held over five consecutive nights, enabled over 100,000 people to control and “see” through the eyes of one of four custom-built, video-streaming robots from a web browser.</p>
<p>While the robots allowed visitors to “see” and explore, four art experts provided live commentary over the video streams, creating another level of engagement and experience that would be impossible during daylight hours.</p>

<p>Three day collaboration in the Old Market Theatre in Brighton to investigate the use of VR technology and projection in performance. A 20 minute performance was created which comprised of three scene.</p>
<p>The first scene, Chair, looks into field of view and a prop that can sit between two states (the real and the improbable).</p>
<p>Geometry investigated relationship between the dancers.</p>
<p>And, the final scene Negative Space plays with architectural scales and light.</p>

<h1>HTC Straylight</h1>
<p>A mobile app for controlling BAT Studio&#8217;s Straylight, an ambitious ‘Vortex Tunnel’ installation which featured at various UK music festivals during 2016.</p>
<p>Designed to celebrate the HTC M9 smartphone&#8217;s advanced 3D capabilities the mobile app created a mirror vortex on the mobiles display using live video feeds from both the front and back facing cameras. As the mobile phone rotated, so too did the giant steel vortex tunnel.</p>

<p>Generative digital artwork for the seven, seven meter tall totems in Leicester’s Highcross.</p>
<p>The public artwork responds to the positions of the sun, a hyperlocal forecast and proximity of people walking nearby.</p>

<h1>50 Million Pixels</h1>
<p>Interactive image mosaic machine conceived for <a href="http://www.bibliothequedesign.com/">Bibliothèque Design&#8217;s</a> 10th anniversary birthday exhibition.</p>
<p>The concept was later re-adapted for <a href="https://www.allude-cashmere.com/en">Allude Cashmere</a> during Berlin&#8217;s Fashion Week to present their latest collection and new seasons colour palette.</p>

<p>An immersive narrative experience inside the uninhabited offices of a fictional energy company poised to announce a momentous discovery.</p>
<p>The prop based experience explored the themes of energy, disbelief and faith in technology.</p>
<p>The experience was created as a play on the prop within a retail environment for <a href="http://bene.com/">Bene</a> during Clerkenwell Design Week.</p>

<h2>Pidee</h2>
<p>A project to create a simple one button, 3 LEDs and 8 switches add on board for the Raspberry Pi, with friends from the <a href="http://hackneyswingers.club">Hackney Swingers Club</a>. The board was born out of the need to identify and debug multiple Raspberry Pis on large scale installations.</p>
<p>However, we also had a desire to make something so kids in schools can jump in and use GPIO right away. Something safe so they can set an input to an output and not fry the Pi.</p>
<p>This is why we made the Pidee board and we hope you like it too.</p>

<h2>A room with many sounds</h2>
<p>The Listening Living Room is a special place inside Guy’s Hospital in London, UK: a contemplative space for cancer patients, outside the clinical environment.</p>
<p>Embedded in a fully bespoke bamboo interior designed by <a href="http://www.batstudio.co.uk/">BAT Studio</a>, four listening zones play high-fidelity generative soundscapes sampled from 35 locations across the world through highly directional speakers.</p>
